The white belt symbolizes purity. The reason this is the first belt in every martial art is because the student has no current knowledge of the art.
This is when the student is first becoming familiar with the style, learning basic stances, strikes, kicks, and stretches. The more advanced moves come later. Don't worry about how you are doing compared to somebody else, everyone was a beginner at one time and everyone moves at different paces.
